City of Temple – 1st Street Parking Garage – Temple, Texas

The City of Temple – 1st Street Parking Garage is the first of two garages recently developed for the city of Temple, Texas. To meet the increasing demand for resident and visitor parking in this rapidly growing city, two garages were commissioned in 2020. Given the schedule, complexity, and architectural detailing of the structures, the general contractor wanted to work with one precast manufacturer on both projects. The design team brought on Legacy Precast to help optimize the design, as well as detail, manufacture, and install this all-precast concrete building system.

 

This stylish, two-bay, four-level structure accommodates 240 vehicles. The precast scope includes 293 pieces of precast/prestressed concrete, including 104 double tees, creating 65,500 square feet of suspended deck. All of the pieces were delivered and erected ahead of schedule and within budget.

 

This garage broadcasts a number of architectural precast details, including cast-in thin brick, a pigmented architectural concrete mix design with a medium sandblast finish, multiple face projections and ‘eyebrows’, and the use of architectural metal screens, faux windows, and vertical architectural precast elements. These vertical elements are located in front of the precast spandrel panels to break up the facade of the structure, yielding a more sophisticated elevation.

 

By utilizing precast concrete and teaming up with a precaster for the design process of this complex structure, it was possible to control costs, meet scheduling demands, and maintain the architectural intent, resulting in an elegant parking solution to benefit this lively city center.
