Best Bridge Structural
Project Overview:
The IH-35 NEX Central Project is part of the larger I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) Program, which aims to improve approximately 20 miles of one of Texas’ busiest interstates in Bexar, Comal, and Guadalupe Counties. This $1.8 billion project includes the construction of two elevated structures in each direction, designed to relieve congestion and improve mobility along the heavily trafficked I-35 corridor.
- 6.4 miles of non-tolled highway improvements
- Two elevated structures in each direction
- $1.8 billion total project cost
- Construction began in June 2022, and completion expected in 2027
Given the tight site constraints and high traffic volume, precast concrete was selected for its ability to minimize construction disruptions, accelerate installation, and enhance long-term durability.
Innovative Precast Solutions:
Bexar Concrete Works is supplying 438 hammerhead bent caps and 27 straddle bents, each weighing over 270,000 pounds. These precast/prestressed concrete components play a critical role in the support and structural integrity of the elevated roadway.
- Minimal Site Disruption & Traffic Impact – Components are installed overnight, allowing for only temporary lane closures, instead of long-term traffic disruptions
- Faster Installation – Precast components are delivered ready to install, significantly reducing construction time compared to cast-in-place methods
- High-Strength, Durable Infrastructure – Ensures long-term performance and resilience for decades of Central Texas drivers
Transforming Texas Infrastructure with Precast Concrete:
The IH-35 NEX Central project is a prime example of how precast concrete enhances large-scale infrastructure projects. By utilizing precast/prestressed concrete for key structural elements, this project can reduce traffic delays, increase construction efficiency, and improve long-term durability.
With millions of drivers depending on the I-35 daily, this expansion is a monumental step forward in ensuring safer, faster, and more reliable travel for Central Texans.
