Oklahoma State University 4th Avenue Parking Garage
The Oklahoma State University 4th Avenue Parking Garage is a 2-bay, 5-story precast concrete structure located just south of the heart of the main OSU campus. This structure was designed primarily to service the McKnight Center for the Performing Arts. The garage’s secondary function is to pick up overflow traffic from the OSU Student Union and the Atherton Hotel which are both located just North of the site.
This 688 space garage is compiled of 515 precast prestressed components (including walls, slabs, beams, spandrels, columns, stairs, and roughly 230 double tees). The garage features outboard columns with large reveals to allow for a more striking and dynamic façade, and the first suspended level uses integral, hand cut, half brick matching the OSU campus aesthetics. By utilizing cast-in brick detailing, the need for on-site masonry was significantly reduced, resulting in a more condensed timeline.
During the construction of this garage, the site for The McKnight Performing Arts Center was still just an on-grade parking lot. One of the many reasons precast concrete was selected for this project was to utilize the quick production time that only precast construction can provide. Upon receiving the ‘notice to proceed’, the precast manufacturer, Coreslab Structures (OKLA), was able to complete and erect all of the precast/prestressed components in 7 short months.
The use of precast concrete allows for a high-quality aesthetic that will proudly blend in with the classic architecture of this campus, while reducing the erection schedule by months. This saved time and money, and perhaps more importantly the adjacent site could now be cleared and the construction of the McKnight Performing Arts Center could move forward.
