Best Medical Project
Project Overview:
The UTSW Brain and Cancer Center Expansion is a state-of-the-art medical facility that enhances patient care, research, and treatment at UT Southwestern Medical Center. The expansion consists of:
- Two nine-story towers flanking a four-story central building
- Direct connection to the existing research hospital for streamlined access
- 800 architectural precast cladding panels that seamlessly integrate into the existing campus aesthetic
In a medical district defined by architectural precast concrete, the use of precast for this expansion was a natural choice—not only for maintaining visual consistency but also for the safety, efficiency, and durability precast provides in healthcare construction.Innovative Precast Solutions:
Enterprise Precast engineered and delivered specialized precast panels designed to meet strict medical facility requirements while allowing for enhanced design flexibility and construction efficiency.
- Performance-Tested for Safety & Environmental Quality Extensive structural and environmental testing ensured the precast panels contributed to an optimized indoor environment while meeting stringent healthcare construction standards.
- Custom Window Conditions for Architectural Flexibility Precast panels were designed with special connections, allowing them to sit outboard from the structure. Custom formwork and finishing enabled window returns, properly encasing the set-back windows for a clean, modern aesthetic.
- Temporary Precast Support for Seamless Construction A unique engineering solution allowed for temporary precast members to be used before final installation, ensuring the structural integrity of the façade while minimizing delays.
- Minimal Site Disturbance at an Active Hospital The project was constructed at the main entryway of an operating hospital, requiring careful coordination to minimize disruptions while maintaining full functionality for patients, staff, and visitors.
A Model for Healthcare Construction Excellence:
This expansion demonstrates why precast concrete is the ideal choice for medical facilities—offering strength, adaptability, and efficiency while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety and environmental performance.
